What are the different types of scars and burns?

There are several different types of scars, which are classified according to their appearance and healing time. These are:

  • Fine-line scars: These scars are visible at first but become paler and flatter over time. They don’t tend to cause long-term pain.
  • Keloid scars: Keloid scars continue to grow even after a wound has healed, often leading to pain and discomfort.
  • Hypertrophic scars: These scars occur when tissue grows around a wound, leading to a thick raised scar.
  • Contracture scars: Contracture scars are typically the result of burns. The formation of this scar pulls a person’s skin together, leading to a tight area of skin that can cause much discomfort.

Burn injuries are classified into three categories:

  • First-degree burns: Only the top layer of skin is injured, leading to red, non-blasted skin.
  • Second-degree burns: The burn harms deeper layers of the skin, leading to blisters and swelling in most cases.
  • Third-degree burns: This is the most severe form of burn, which destroys multiple layers of the skin and possible penetrates the bone and muscles. The result is deep red, leathery tissue.

Whether you have suffered a scar or a burn, compensation can support your recovery journey.

What if my injury has impacted me psychologically?

Scars and burns, especially in areas like the face are arms, can deeply harm a person’s self-esteem, leading to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and low body image.

Do I have a claim?

Suffering a burn or scald to your face, limb or torso due to someone else’s negligence is a physically and emotionally traumatic experience.

You may find that you have permanent scars, which continue to cause you emotional pain long after the initial burns have healed.

If your burn is due to the fault or negligence of others – such as through a motor vehicle incident or accident at work – you are entitled to compensation.
